Frankincense Essential Oil is one of the most well-loved and most well known aromatherapy oils in the world.

Almost everyone has heard of Frankincense owing to it’s mention in the Bible.

Frankincense Essential Oil Health benefits

Frankincense is considered to be broadly helpful. As an anti-inflammatory it is immune supporting and broadly stress reducing. It is also considered to be mood-enhancing, and generally very supportive of emotional health. It is also thought to help balance female hormones.

Frankincense Essential Oil health benefits are thought to include: Anti-ageing + anti-anxiety + antiseptic + astringent + carminative (reduces intestinal bloating and gas) +  cicatrisant (wound healing / formation of a cicatrix) + cytophylactic (protects cells against lytic agents – Cell lysis induced by lytic agents is the terminal phase of a series of events leading to membrane disorganisation and breakdown with the release of cellular macromolecules. … Isolated membranes of erythrocytes and bacteria are rapidly dissociated by surface-active agents) + disinfectant + diuretic + emmenagogue (helps stimulate and increase menstrual flow) + expectorant

*For information relating to Frankincense Serata’s legendary anti-inflammatory abilities, please scroll to the end of this article. Thank you.

Frankincense Essential Oil Energetic Qualities

On an energetic level Frankincense Essential Oil is all about a singleness of purpose and of heroic endurance, anchored by a sage groundedness. It facilitates the ability to ignore the calamitous chatter of our minds and the world, permitting clarity to prevail, a state through which inspiration may be received and acted upon. Then, once received, and a course of action is embarked upon, with the perseverance of Frankincense Essential Oil this endeavour will be seen through until it’s conclusion, no matter how long it takes.

[I] purchased frankincense oil from you at Wells Market and I have to say it is the best I have ever come across…so thanks…

Frankincense Essential Oil For Skincare

Frankincense Essential Oil is frequently used in top of the range anti-ageing skincare products because it reduces the appearance of wrinkles and diminishes age spots by promoting cellular rejuvenation. It’s one of eight essential oils in our top selling face oil, FACIAL OIL No. 2, which is formulated to rejuvenate and eliminate acne, along with associated scarring.

Frankincense Essential Oil Health Benefits

Frankincense Essential Oil lowers blood pressure and reduces heart rate, thereby relieving stress and tension ultimately leading to an improved sense of wellbeing when diffused or applied topically in an appropriate dilution.

Frankincense is very useful for treating respiratory disorders, including those caused by allergies and asthma as well as those caused by acute colds.

★★★★★ 5 Star Google Review :: Fantastic products, which work really well. I’ve just watched a woman cure her migraine by breathing in some frankincense essential oil at the Wild As The Wind stand at Wells [Market]. Amazing!

Irene, Bath

It can also be used for oral hygiene purposes, helping to alleviate bad breath and mouth sores. This can easily be done by adding it to homemade toothpaste.

Frankincense Aromatherapy Oil can also be added to coconut oil, along with Sweet Orange Essential Oil for oil pulling. There is mounting evidence that Frankincense Essential Oil may help to improve the condition of cavities also.

On a recent mini break around the Bath area I was suffering from a bad migraine which I just could not get a handle on. Luckily we came across Wells Market. [where ] I met Rachel. When I approached her I was really unwell. The pain was as severe as I ever experienced. Thankfully Rachel got me to inhale Frankincense [Essential Oil]. Within a few minutes I was pain free and ready to enjoy the remainder of my trip. I am so grateful to Rachel and her extreme knowledge of aromatherapy and its benefits. I look forward to purchasing more products in the future. Thank you Rachel. Love & Light Laura

Frankincense Essential Oil Carteri, Serata & Frereana

There are three main types of Frankincense Essential Oil: Carteri, (Carterii), Frereana, and Serata (Serrata). They share many healing properties in common, with a few minor differences.

Frankincense Carteri

Frankincense Carteri Aromatherapy Oil contains a lot of very healing constituents, including alpha-pinene, among a number of other mono-terpenes, which makes a very effective essential oil for immune support.

Frankincense Carteri is also known to reduce wrinkles and helps to heal scar tissue. It is for this reason that Wild As The Wind FACIAL OIL No. 2 and FACIAL OIL No. 8 contain Frankincense Carteri Essential Oil.

There are two ways of spelling Frankincense Carteri Essential Oil, and both are considered correct.

  1. Carteri
  2. Carterii

Frankincense Serrata

Frankincense Serrata contains a good amount of the mono-terpenes: alpha-thujene, alpha-pinene, and limonene, all of which make it antiseptic, decongestant, and profoundly anti-inflammatory in action.

Used in Auyreveda for the treatment of painful, inflammatory conditions, Frankincense Serata is also called Indian Frankincense, even though this beautiful oil also comes from Oman and Somalia etc…

Frankincense Serata Essential Oil is one of the best aromatherapy oils for providing symptomatic relief of autoimmune conditions. It is certainly one of the most afordable, beaten only in price by Cananga Essential Oil (from the Ylang Ylang Aromatherapy Oil family), and Copaiba Essential Oil.

Helichrysum Essential Oil is possibly the best anti-inflammatory aromatherapy oil, but it is generally around three times more expensive than Frankincense Serata Essential Oil.

It is this variety of frankincense that is used during meditation and as an anointing oil in religious ceremonies within the Catholic Church.

There are two ways of spelling Frankincense Serata Essential Oil, and both are considered correct.

  1. Serata
  2. Serrata

Frankincense Serata Aromatherapy Oil is an incredibly important ingredient within a popular Wild As The Wind product: Frankincense & St John’s Wort Preparation, which is referred to as Magic Oil, more often than not, in customer feedback.

Buy Essential Oils

Frankincense Frereana

Frankincense Frereana and Frankincense Carteri grow in the mountains of Somalia. However, Frereana prefers higher altitudes than Carteri, which affects the chemical make-up of the two different varieties of tree, thus making the therapeutic benefits vary somewhat…

Frankincense Frereana contains high levels of pinene, thujene, and cymene, making it antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and analgesic. It is thus excellent for treating inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, bruising, and traumatic injuries such as sprains and impact injuries etc.

Like the other varieties it also has analgesic, anti-oxidant, antimicrobial, immune-boosting, mood enhancing and calming properties

Frankincense Essential Oil Healing Abilities

The list of conditions which can be helped by using Frankincense Essential Oil is considerable

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Anxiety
  • Cystitis
  • Headaches
  • Hemorrhoids (Piles)
  • Insect Bites
  • Immune support
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Menstrual pain and PMS
  • Mental fatigue, focus and acuity
  • Respiratory support (asthma, bronchitis, coughs, congestion, catarrh, laryngitis, mucus)
  • Skincare: acne, abscesses, bruises, colagen support, scars, wrinkles, wounds
  • Sleep
  • UTI’s (urinary tract infections)

Frankincense Essential Oil For Emotional Support

Frankincense Essential Oil is calming and emotionally soothing. It also improves cognition, focus, and memory.

It is partly the sequiterpenes in Frankincense Essential Oil which help to reduce anxiety and enhance mood.

Sequiterpenes help carry oxygen to the brain where they stimulate the Hippocampus, which calms anxious thoughts and quiets feelings of anxiety.

The Hippocampus is a small organ within the medial temporal lobe which is an important part of the limbic system, the area of the brain which regulates emotions. It is predominantly associated with memory, especially long-term memory, and for playing an important role in spatial navigation.

There are thousands of differing sesquiterpenes, some of which can be found in the following essential oils.

  • Cedarwood Essential Oil 98%
  • Copaiba Essential Oil 97%
  • Vetiver Essential Oil 97%
  • Spikenard Essential Oil 93%
  • Sandalwood Essential Oil 90%
  • BlackPepper Essential Oil 74%
  • Patchouli Essential Oil 71%
  • Myrrh Essential Oil 62%
  • Ginger Essential Oil 59%
  • Frankincense Essential Oil 8%

As you can see from the list above, there are several other essential oils that are more well endowed with sesquiterpenes than Frankincense.

*FACIAL OIL No. 2 also contains Sandalwood Essential Oil, Patchouli Essential Oil and Myrrh Essential Oil, along with Rose Otto Essential Oil and Geranium Essential Oil, all of which have an incredibly soothing effect on our emotions. It also contains Lavender Essential Oil and Sweet Orange Essential Oil, which again have a very definite positive impact on our emotional state of being…

FACIAL OIL No. 8 contains Helichrysum Essential Oil as well as Frankincense Carteri Essential Oil, but with the addition of Clary Sage Essential Oil and German Chamomile Essential Oil it is an immensely emotionally supportive oil.

Frankincense Essential Oil For Cancer

There are many people who believe Frankincense Essential Oil can help prevent and treat cancer, but there are others who dispute this.

I have already written about this in some length, towards the end of the article entitled Essential Oil First Aid Kit, so please visit this page for further information.

*However, it’s worth considering Myrrh Essential Oil, which is presently out-performing all other essential oils in anti-cancer trials. Although Myrrh Aromatherapy Oil in combination with Frankincense Essential Oil will potentially have all of your bases covered. (Both of these aromatherapy oils are present in Wild As The Wind FACIAL OIL No. 2.)

Several research groups have found that frankincense has promising anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects when tested in lab studies and on animals. Frankincense oil has been shown to help fight cells of specific types of cancer. Researchers in China investigated the anti-cancer effects of frankincense and myrrh oils on five tumor cells lines in a lab study. The results showed that human breast and skin cancer cell lines showed increased sensitivity to the combination of myrrh and frankincense essential oils.

A 2012 study even found that a chemical compound found in frankincense called AKBA is successful at killing cancer cells that have become resistant to chemotherapy, which may make it a potential natural cancer treatment.

Dr. Josh Axe

In addition, research is being conducted on an ongoing basis and new results continue to prove very promising:

Frankincense For Inflammation

★★★★★ 5 Star Etsy Review: Pain and swellings have gone thanks to this miracle oil. The help from shop owner is amazing and I wish we could have these oils on NHS. I highly recommend this seller for her skill and knowledge and will purchase more items in the future.

Buy Essential Oils

Frankincense Serata Essential Oil is immensely anti-inflammatory. Alongside Geranium Aromatherapy Oil and Lavender Essential Oil, Frankincense Serata Oil is Wild As The Wind’s top selling essential oil… and, in the vast majority of cases, it’s bought for it’s anti-inflammatory abilities.

Wild As the Wind Frankincense Essential Oils

Wild As the Wind carry two exceptional Frankincense essential oils: Frankincense Carteri and Frankincense Serata, both of which are distilled in the UK to avoid adulteration.

This means that the Frankincense resin is shipped to the UK from Somali before being processed into essential oil.

Frankincense Serata Essential Oil is particularly beneficial when combined with Sweet Orange Essential Oil, which together can reduce inflammation caused by oxidative stress.

Wild As The Wind sell a Massage Oil containing both Frankincense Serata Essential Oil and Sweet Orange Essential Oil with a Sweet Almond base, the latter also being an anti-inflammatory oil. This is the massage oil that is used professionally by Osteopaths and Massage Therapists.

In addition, Wild As The Wind combine Frankincense Serata Essential Oil and Sweet Orange Essential Oil with a St John’s Wort infused base oil, (at a ratio of 1:5).

St John’s Wort is another incredibly anti-inflammatory oil infusion, that is also excellent for Sciatic problems. As mentioned above, this combination is called Frankincense & St John’s Wort Preparation, and is very effective for reducing symptoms of an inflammatory origin.

These three simple ingredients are the only constituents in Wild As The Wind’s Frankincense & St John’s Wort Preparation. However, as St John’s Wort is contra-indicated with a lot of Western medicines, you must be sure to avoid it if you are on strong meds that are know to cause a problem.

The most commonly prescribed drugs with contraindications are methotrexate, indinavir, cyclosporin and SSRI’s. Those on warfarin also may have issues.

Using Frankincense Essential Oil

The best way to use Frankincense Essential Oil is by diluting it… although, if a neat drop or two of Frankincense hits the skin, there’s no need to panic!

When being used for anti-inflammatory purposes the best carrier oil to use is Sweet Almond Oil, as this is naturally anti-inflammatory also.

Some people like to administer Frankincense orally. They do so by placing one drop on a teaspoon with a solid block of organic coconut oil, and placing it their mouths. They allow the Frankincense Essential Oil and Organic Coconut Oil to sit on their tongue, pressing this combo of oils into the roof of their mouths.

This is a great way of dealing with inflammatory headaches, and any malaise of the head.
